The Grandfather Chair comes from an exploration of how an object expresses history and use. Rather than deteriorating, the chair grows richer and more complex over time. Made of hollow mesh framework, the piece is intended as public, outdoor seating. The form aims to allow maximum seating choices and shield an interior planting space.
As ‘Grandfather’ sits every day in his chosen position, the plant life underneath reacts, being snuffed out in some areas and growing thick in others. As each generation of usage leaves its mark, the structure of the piece evolves so that future users will be reminded of the small, daily habits of the past.
