Bell & Whistle

American Bistro

2011
Hopewell, New Jersey
Restaurant
Completed with HACBM Architects

Located in the small historic town of Hopewell, New Jersey, the project occupies a site within the town’s designated historic district, where strict form and material guidelines govern new construction. The restaurant sits behind a main street building containing a café and residence above, positioned between a church to the north and a firehouse to the south — the source of its name.

The design draws from Hopewell’s established architectural language through the use of stone and copper, referencing the textures and tones of nearby historic structures. Floor-to-ceiling operable glass doors open the dining area to an east-facing garden court planted with mature Chinese Red Dawn trees. A fan-patterned stone path and a lighted lattice trellis mark the entry sequence, integrating landscape and structure to create a small retreat discovered within the town’s dense fabric.
